Sarah Jeffery

Sarah is a recorder player and clog dancer currently based in the Netherlands. Having recently graduated cum laude from her master studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Sarah now collaborates closely with composers, in particular to create music-theatre. Prior to her studies in Amsterdam, Sarah gained a first class honours degree in music at the Birmingham Conservatoire in England, under the tuition of Annabel Knight and Ross Winters.

As well as being a soloist, Sarah performs with a number of her own ensembles: aXolot (recorder trio, Jerboah (pop band), Theater fluup! (music-theatre for toddlers), The Royal Wind Music (large Renaissance recorder consort), Bo is Burning (experimental music-theatre) and The White Noise Orchestra (free improvisation). Her performance CV presents venues such as the Utrecht Early Music Festival, Gaudeamus Music Week, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, NEU/NOW Glasgow, Sonorities Festival Belfast, and Oerol festival, Terschelling.

Sarah has appeared on BBC, Swiss and Dutch radio and television, and has recorded on a number of studio CDs.   She is active in education: alongside a number of recorder students, she gives workshops in improvisation and composition at the SoundLAB, using electronic sound installations. Sarah regularly lectures at education conferences on topics from early years education to humour in music. She runs a Youtube channel – Team Recorder – providing recorder tutorials every week. Sarah also writes about music, for publications such as Primephonic, Tempo and Blokfluitist.

About the course

The course is aimed at experienced recorder players who want to spend a few days playing the larger instruments.  The smallest recorder on this course will be a tenor, all the way down to contra (and below if possible).  The objective is to have fun, playing a variety of music at 8-foot (without the squeeks of a sopranino) in a smiley and encouraging atmosphere.

The timetable is flexible and will vary according to the needs and wishes of those attending.  The early part of Wednesday and Thursday afternoons are free for relaxation, exploring Lyme Regis or informal recorder playing.

The course will start at 11.00am on Tuesday 5th and will finish with at 11.30 Friday 8th February.  Bed and breakfast is available on Monday for £20 per person, if you wish to arrive early.
